Interment of Ashes
Many people are choosing a direct cremation and then arranging a do-it-yourself memorial service or celebration of life ceremony after the remains of a loved one’s ashes are returned to the family.
The Direct Cremation Process
Due to crematorium ownership within Christchurch / North Canterbury, you may need to engage a funeral director to arrange the direct cremation however, there is provision for the public to access one private crematorium directly.
The direct cremation journey involves the transfer of the deceased from the place of death; sometimes a basic level of mortuary care; sometimes an arranged final viewing; transfer of deceased to the crematorium; cremation; remains of ashes made available for family collection.
All operators complete the necessary cremation and registration of death documentation with the family. This can be in person or on-line.

Direct Cremation Savings
Direct cremations allow more time to arrange a do-it-yourself ceremony, and in most instances, it can be significantly more affordable with approximate savings of between $4,000 to $10,000 in funeral expenses.
Do-it-yourself Memorial Service or Celebration of Life Ceremony
Coordinating some form of celebration of life ceremony can be organised privately without the need to engage funeral directors.
When, where, and how choices are limitless.
When doing it yourself, some elements to consider could include (but not limited to):
- Should you engage a funeral director or private operator for a direct cremation
- The different types of ceremony
- The best location for the service
- Who should officiate
- The order of service that may include music and/or a photo montage presentation
- How to save on flowers
- The most appropriate memorial notice
- How to arrange a cemetery ashes interment.
Something to be mindful of is that although it is as much as about honouring the deceased wishes, it’s also a significant “goodbye” journey for the living left behind. Some form of ceremony can begin someone’s grief healing journey after losing a loved one that has been instrumental to their life wellbeing.
